Introducing Mark Lenihan, one of our newest 1Rebel instructor recruits. Mark wasn't always the vivacious, charismatic guy you'll meet in studio, he's been through a serious transformation to get to where he is today. Let's meet the man behind the muscle.

1. So tell us about your background.

I grew up in South West London and was pretty much a rebel from day 1. I got interested in skating and graffiti art, which introduced me to the world of alcohol and smoking...along with breaking the law.

I was skinny-fat (overweight with no muscle), I couldn't do a pull-up, would struggle to perform 10 full press-ups and I didn't even know what 'squat' meant. I was a party animal, I would break the law and live that hyped up sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle.

I won't go into detail but it was a troubled time of my life and it wasn't until 2010 when I realised I needed to make a change and turn my life around for the better. That's when I discovered the fitness world.

2. What made you want to change your lifestyle?

I think I became aware that I needed to make a change over time which was a slow process- it wasn't overnight. I would do things I thought I liked doing like 'getting smashed' and would realise the short term gain wasn't out-weighing the long term negative effects. I got into meditation which I found very beneficial for becoming more self-aware. This awareness of the choices I was making and how they effected myself and people around me led me realising that I needed to change.

The most drastic change was my mentality. My mindset shifted from an epicurean lifestyle (living for the moment mentality) to a more stoic way of life, which is postponing momentary short-term pleasure for long-term gain for my future and for others. It's easy to show humility in words but it's another thing to show humility in actions.

3. How did you get involved in the fitness industry?

I got into the fitness industry though my mate James who use to be in the army. In 2010 we moved into a flat and that's when I got the 'fitness bug'. I would train with him everyday doing brutal military style workouts in the park. He worked for a outdoor military bootcamp company and when he went back to the army I covered his classes. After that I became a PT and started teaching more fitness classes.

4. You’re now vegan right? How did that change come about and do you find a Vegan diet difficult to maintain?

If you've seen my Instagram you'd know I adhere to a plant-based diet, meaning I basically only eat grass, leafs and dress in multi-colored vegan clothing. I was pescatarian for a few years before that and didn't eat much dairy so the transition was easy. A plant-based diet is simple to maintain if you've done your research beforehand. "If all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." Get a full tool belt and sculpting a healthy, fit & functional body becomes very simple. There are so much options once you've got the knowledge.

5. What made you want to join the dream team at 1Rebel?

I wanted to join the #RebelArmy because I think the brand suits my personality and mentality. I've always been a rebel at heart, but now I don't need to break the law to be one...haha. I want to break archaic mindsets and inspire people.

6. Why should people come to your sessions?

You should come to my sessions because I'll give you 100% of my energy that'll positively motivate you to be the best version of yourself.
